Position Summary:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner who functions in collaboration with an attending physician and works with an intra-professional team. The APP has a primary focus of vascular surgery and is certified as a first or second surgical assistant.

The APP will work on the inpatient Cardiovascular Service units at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. This includes the CVI Lab, CVOR, CVICU, and CVSD.

The Advanced Practice Provider is responsible for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population in collaboration with the physician. Functions as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care to patients in their area of clinical expertise and within the scope of their licensure and credentialed privileges. Follows established standards, procedures, and practices and gives specific patient management directions to nursing and other staff. Incumbents in this position may be required to perform all or a significant combination of duties depending on their specialty area. The advanced practice clinician reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization and adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance program, and all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical Care
  • The APP provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. This individual works in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law, hospital regulations, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care.
  • Obtains medical histories, performs physical examination, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
  • Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy.
  • This position supports a 24/7 clinical service and individuals in this role are scheduled for a mix of day/night/weekend/and holiday call. The approximate size of the call team is 7 FTEs.

2. Patient Education & Psychosocial Support
  • The APP will educate patients/families on care and recommended or available resources. In collaboration with the supervising/collaborating MD, this may be inclusive of admitting instructions, treatment plan, actual and potential side effects of treatments or medications, and discharge planning.
  • The APP will obtain consents of patients for procedures/surgeries after discussion with attending surgeon. This will include marking the correct site prior to surgery. The APP will discuss the procedure and alternative therapies available and all risks and benefits regarding the procedure. The APP may assist with endovascular vein harvest.

3. Information Management
  • The APP ensures appropriate documentation in the electronic health record. The APP provides this documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information of all forms, whether computer-based, paper, film, voice, or other media, from unauthorized access modification, destruction, or intentional or accidental disclosure.

4. Quality Management
  • The APP demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • The APP ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.

5. Professional Development
  • The APP continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency and maintains certification via completion of required continuing professional education for their specific discipline.

REQUIREMENTS

Education (number of years and type required to perform the position duties):
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree and graduation from an approved physician assistant or nurse practitioner program required.
  • Completion of vascular residency program preferred.

Experience (number of years and type required to meet acceptable level of performance):
  • One (1) or two (2) years caring for vascular patients is preferred.

Licensure/Certification:
  • Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), OR certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
  • Licensed within the State of Maryland by the Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance or Board of Nursing.
  • DEA, CDS Maryland.
  • ACLS/BCLS.
