We currently have a full-time opening for an Inpatient Physician Assistant to work in our department of hospital medicine. This position offers you the opportunity to work along an attending physician providing cross-coverage in a small community hospital with access to the resources provided by a large healthcare system. This is a swing shift schedule and requires someone with experience; no new grads, please!

Job Summary: Performs a variety of duties such as history and physicals, and provides care to assigned patients. Assesses, diagnoses, documents findings, and writes medical orders. Makes clinical decisions relative to patient management through collaboration with physicians.

To qualify for this position, the physician assistant must have:
  • Education/Training – Graduation from a physician assistant program accredited by theAccreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Bachelor's degree; Master's degree.
  • Experience – A minimum of one year of inpatient experience. No new grads, please.
  • License/Certification/Registration – National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification. Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities – Strong verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills.

Some primary duties and responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complying with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Developing treatment plan and discussing proposed course of treatment with the patient's attending physician and other healthcare team members as appropriate, including consultations and referrals.
  • Functioning under surgeon's direction as First and Second Assistant in surgical cases. Assisting in necessary preparations prior to and after surgery. Maintaining on-call responsibility as required.
  • Initiating, performing, and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests necessary in routine and emergent care of patients.
  • Monitoring patients and communicating significant patient findings or changes in patient's status to the appropriate physician.
  • Obtaining detailed and accurate history, performing physical examinations, and reviewing medical records to assess patients' health status.
  • Participating in meetings and on committees and representing the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Performing emergency lifesaving procedures as appropriate.
  • Performing necessary rounds independently or with the attending physician and/or students.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Performing procedures as appropriate for patient care. Writing appropriate order sets, including medications.
  • Providing emotional and educational support to patient and family as may be appropriate.
  • Responding to nursing and ancillary status calls.
  • Writing progress notes on patient's medical record indicating patient status, treatment, and procedures performed.
