Position Summary:

This position offers you the opportunity to care for patients in an outpatient orthopedic clinic and first assist with foot and ankle orthopedic surgeries, as well as the ability to work at the region’s only orthopedic specialty hospital while supported by and/or working in collaboration with residents and fellows. In addition, you will have a Monday-Friday schedule with no weekends and no holidays while practicing at MUMH and our MedStar Orthopedic Clinic in Westminster, MD.

Job Summary:
Performs a variety of duties such as independently evaluating and providing care to assigned patients. On an independent basis, assesses, diagnoses and documents findings. Writes medical orders. Makes clinical decisions relative to patient management based on the surgeon's protocols.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education/Training – Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience – No experience required. Experience working under the direction of a surgeon preferred.
  • License/Certification/Registration – National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification. Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities – Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Analyzes the assessment data in determining diagnoses by defining and prioritizing actual or potential care problems as the basis for designing interventions for the restoration of health. Demonstrates ability to respond with appropriate interventions in emergency situations.
  • Completes competency evaluations in appropriate areas. Demonstrates knowledge and skill to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served and completes mandatory in-services.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives. Adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Develops treatment plan and discusses proposed course of treatment with the patient's attending physician and other healthcare team members as appropriate, including consultations and referrals.
  • Documents history and physicals (H & Ps), treatment plans and progress notes on all actual or potential patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Initiates appropriate referral/consultations, keeping in mind patient safety and cost containment issues. Independently sees patients on clinic days, as needed. Develops patient problem list in order to ensure that patient receives comprehensive care. Uses approved forms for documentation of patient information.
  • Evaluates patient's progress toward attainment of goals through continuous evaluation of the patient's changing condition and response to therapeutic intervention;, modifies the plan of care to optimize patient outcomes. Provides follow-up on progress notes on all actual or potential patients undergoing orthopedic surgery.
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes that are individualized to the patient. Under the direction of the physician, ensures that the patient and other healthcare team members identify expected outcomes of care as the basis for developing multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Initiates, performs and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests necessary in routine and emergent care of patients.
  • Monitors patients and communicates significant patient findings or changes in patients' status to the appropriate physician and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams, participates in meetings and on committees, and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Responds appropriately to all nursing and ancillary status calls. Provides emotional and educational support to the patient and family as may be appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
