Position Summary:

Job Summary:
Performs a variety of duties, such as history and physicals, and provides care to assigned patients. Assesses, diagnoses, and documents findings. Writes medical orders and/or prescriptions. Makes clinical decisions relative to patient management through collaboration with physicians.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.

  • Some experience preferred.

  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification.
  • Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives. Adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Develops treatment plan and discusses proposed course of treatment with patient's attending physician and other healthcare team members as appropriate, including consultants and referrals.
  • Functions under surgeon's direction as a surgical assistant. Assists in necessary preparations prior to and after surgery.
  • Initiates standing and regular orders, including activity, diet, vital signs, routine laboratory work, routine diagnostic tests, laxatives, sedatives, analgesics, and appropriate medical and rehab therapies.
  • Monitors patients and communicates significant patient findings or changes in patients' status to the appropriate physician.
  • Obtains detailed and accurate history, performs physical examinations, and reviews medical records to assess patients' health status.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs emergency lifesaving procedures as appropriate.
  • Performs necessary rounds independently or with the attending physician and/or residents.
  • Performs procedures as appropriate for patient care. Writes appropriate order sets, including medications.
  • Provides emotional and educational support to patient and family as may be appropriate.
  • Responds to nursing and ancillary status calls.
  • Stays aware of diagnostic tests reports that require prompt medical intervention. Communicates directly with physician for interventions not covered by standing orders.
  • Writes progress note in patient's medical record to document patient status, treatment, and procedures performed. Dictates discharge summaries as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
