Position Summary:

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership for Hospital Medicine providers in delivering the highest quality, safety, and efficiency for our patients and the highest possible patient, physician, and staff satisfaction related to the Hospitalist service. Leads regular departmental meetings and represents Hospital Medicine in appropriate hospital committees.
2. Partners with Hospital Medicine Administrative Director to manage the department. Collaborates with service line leaders and hospital clinical leaders to determine departmental strategy and operationalize a high-performing hospitalist program.
3. Participates actively as a service line leader in systemwide strategy, finances, operations, and clinical bodies including, but not limited to, the Executive Committee and Clinical Practice Council.
4. Oversees department providers, including performance reviews and FPPE/OPPE. Offers feedback to providers to ensure compliance with departmental policies and to improve quality and productivity. In partnership with Administrative Director, determines and implements staffing and recruiting plan, interviews prospective providers, and conducts reference reviews. Implements a robust provider onboarding process and assists with hospitalist training.
5. Holds responsibility for the hospitalist schedule and related shift operating model. In partnership with administrative staff, collects and collates requests, produces schedules, tracks shifts worked and PTO taken, and ensures coverage in light of call-offs. Calibrates staffing based on patient census to ensure optimal provider workload.
6. Supports the Administrative Director as needed to track and manage the Hospital Medicine budget, biweekly payroll, coding and billing, revenue cycle, and overall financial performance. Participates in physician coding and documentation reviews and feedback sessions, as applicable. Provides related training as deemed necessary by Administrative Director.
7. In partnership with Administrative Director, shares individual quality and productivity metrics with the team members periodically to trend performance. Contributes to the annual selection of metrics for the Hospitalist Quality incentive program. Assists with metric definition, measurement, reporting, and communication as needed.
8. Models clinical partnership between hospitalists and all members of the care team. Ensures integration of advanced practice providers into the hospitalist service. Serves as the point of contact for interdepartmental collaboration and conflict resolution and advances standardized communication protocols with other clinical areas (e.g., emergency medicine, nursing, etc.).
9. Creates appropriate citizenship rules for physician engagement with various committee roles and quality improvement projects. Role-models a mindset of continuous improvement and sponsors quality improvement initiatives driven by hospitalists.
10. Performs other leadership and management duties as needed.
11. Continues to perform the below duties of a clinical hospitalist.
12. Conducts initial patient assessments and admission procedures. Formulates and implements a treatment plan. Schedules and reviews clinical and diagnostic tests as medically necessary for each patient. Provides timely and regular reports to primary care physicians and family members regarding all aspects of patient's medical condition and course of treatment. Conducts multiple rounds daily as necessary for the acuity of the patients' conditions. Coordinates and integrates specialty and subspecialty consultations. Coordinates patient transfers to and from critical care, medical/surgical units, skilled nursing facility, or home. Discharges patients back to the care of the primary care physician.
13. Responds to all clinical rapid response calls and cardiopulmonary resuscitations with the exception of patients in the Emergency Department, unless specifically requested. Provides behavioral restraint evaluations upon consultation by hospital's inpatient psychiatry unit in accordance with their respective hospital's medical executive committee policies.
14. Visits the critical care unit when required to assist nursing in the evaluation of unstable patients. Provides medical inpatient consultations for patients under the care of a specialty service, including performance of preoperative medical clearance, upon request. Utilizes established clinical pathways and protocols when appropriate.
15. Coordinates with the clinical resource management and case management departments of the hospital as appropriate for each patient under their care, and actively participates in multidisciplinary rounds to optimize patient flow and ensure appropriate level of care determinations.
16. Ensures patient care is delivered in a timely manner and hospital clinical resources are used judiciously. Optimizes patient length of stay and facilitates the discharge or transfer of patients in an expeditious manner. Demonstrates knowledge of expected length of stay from established utilization criteria when generating patient care plans and anticipated discharge dates.
17. Maintains an effective communication process to interface with referring primary care physicians, attending physicians, consultants, nursing, patients, and family members. Consistently shapes optimal patient and family satisfaction and participates in department and hospital initiatives related to patient experience.
18. Provides accurate, complete, and timely documentation for all patient encounters in patient medical records and encounter forms consistent with evaluation and management documentation guidelines. Complies with all CMS requirements for documentation necessary for correct billing.
19. Participates in activities of the hospital and medical staff, including committee and medical staff meetings, which are intended to promote the provision of high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care. Complies with both governmental and state accreditation regulations. Actively contributes to groups and initiatives dedicated to governing or improving clinical quality and operations.
20. Contributes to the achievement of established MedStar goals and objectives for quality and patient safety.
21. Participates in department's on-call ("jeopardy") program, as per local departmental policy norms and expectations, where applicable.
22. Arrives on time for assigned shifts and does not leave before the scheduled end of the shift unless all assigned clinical work is complete, all partners have been checked with to make sure that they do not need help, all discharge coordination is complete, all documentation for that shift and any prior shift is complete, and all efforts to answer questions from patients and their families have been answered to their satisfaction. Hospitalist should seek to use any excess time in a shift to achieve the highest possible quality of care and patient satisfaction by revisiting the patients towards the end of the shift to ensure that they are doing well and have no further questions and by checking the medical record for any completed ancillary testing or notes from consultants.
23. Conducts themselves in a manner consistent with a position as an attending physician towards other physicians, staff members, patients, and their families. Partners effectively with all members of the inpatient care team, including medical supervision of advanced practice providers, such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, where applicable.
24. Meets medical staff bylaws requirements for participation in departmental and hospital committees and functions.
25. Participates in all quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives of the department as assigned by the Program Director/Chair.
26. Role-models the MedStar Medical Group values of Service, Patient First, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Teamwork (SPIRIT) and consistently demonstrate high ethical standards.
27. Participates, as directed and applicable, in the development and implementation of clinical research protocols consistent with applicable institutional standards and guidelines.
Supports the medical education programs and activities of the department as applicable.
a. Provides direct supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and allied healthcare professionals for the delivery of inpatient and outpatient services.
b. Conducts teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences for medical students, residents, and fellows.
c. Participates in the postgraduate continuing education activities of the department.
d. Participates in the teaching and supervision of allied healthcare professionals assigned to the department.
e. Supports the scholarly activity of the department through contributions to the medical literature.

Qualifications:
1. Board-certified in internal medicine, family practice, or general surgery. Recent graduates of residencies must become board-certified within three years of completion of residency training.
2. Appropriate appointment to the active staff of hospital and/or any other facility to which physician may be assigned.
3. Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Maryland and/or the District of Columbia, as appropriate.
